Outreach

Outreach efforts from NSF ABI, CAREER Grants (2019-2023)

As part of our lab's outreach efforts, we develop several curricular material for K-12 teachers to utilize in their classroom. Here are several lesson plans that we have developed over the years. Just download the Zip folder and access all lesson plans! More lesson plans can also be found here.

Dive into the heart of hop cultivation with Arun Sethuraman, Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at San Diego State University, as we unravel the findings from an enlightening semester-long greenhouse experiment. SDSU students took on the challenge of exploring the diversity of hop cultivars, meticulously nurturing 10 replicates each of 5 US-based (Brewer's Gold, Columbus, Comet, Neomexicanus, Zeus) and 5 non-US (Hallertauer, Saaz, Sorachi Ace, Southern Cross, Fuggle) varieties under identical conditions in a common-garden setting. Join us as we delve into the rich tapestry of data and insights gleaned from this comprehensive study. The students' analyses shed light on the unique characteristics and growth patterns of these cultivars, providing a wealth of knowledge that could reshape cultivation practices and pave the way for innovative brewing possibilities. Tune in to discover the potential implications of their findings and the future of hop cultivation as seen through the lens of academia. Watch the full video here.

October 2024 - Middle Schoolers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

The Sethuraman Lab had the pleasure of hosting several middle-schoolers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in October 2024, where we introduced these students to the fundamentals of evolution, and how we explore evolutionary history as applied to a variety of projects in conservation, understanding human disease, and plant breeding in our lab. We even got a "okay woah so cool!!” from their parents!

April 2025 - Middle Schoolers from Marston Middle School, San Diego

Picture
The Sethuraman Lab visited Marston Middle School in San Diego in April 2025 to spend an entire outreach day, presenting our research and teaching evolution to middle-schoolers! when asked if the science teacher wanted us to come back this year, they said "I would absolutely love it! Preferably after testing, late April or any time in May."
